Two optofluidic devices for the refractive index measurement of small volume of fluids
نویسندگان
چکیده
Two simple optofluidic devices based on a microprism and a refraction channel, respectively, are proposed for measuring the refractive index of fluids. The microprism chip consists of an optical waveguide channel and a single triangular chamber filled with the test fluid, while the refraction channel chip consists of a single turning channel which functions as a liquid-core/solid-cladding optical waveguide. In both chips, the refractive index of the test fluid is calculated from a CCD image of the refracted ray in accordance with simple geometrical optics principles. The experimental results show that the refraction channel chip provides a more accurate measurement performance than the microprism chip; particularly for colloidal samples. However, the refraction channel chip is suitable only for the measurement of fluids with a refractive index greater than that of the chip substrate. Overall, the results presented in this study show that both devices provide a simple, low cost and effective means of determining the refractive index of a wide range of common test fluids with nano-liter volume.

متن کاملTip sensor probe for changing refractive index measurement in small volumes
In this paper, a tapered tip optical fiber probe sensor for localized refractive index (RI) measurements is presented. This sensor’s interaction with analytes is confined to a few micro-meters which makes it a promising candidate for in-vivo or even intra-cellular RI monitoring. This tapered tip was simply fabricated by etching optical fiber with hydrofluoric acid to a conic shape with a sub-m...

We have implemented a multifunctional optofluidic sensor that can monitor changes in the refractive index and pressure of biofluid simultaneously and can detect free-solution molecular interaction in situ. In this Letter, we demonstrate two major improvements of this sensor proven by both simulation and experiments. One improvement is the broader measurement range of refractive index by making ...
متن کاملMeasuring the temperature dependence of refractive index in water phantom for precise monitoring of the absorbed dose by radiation therapy techniques
In this paper, an experimental setup is used to measure the temperature dependence of the refractive index of a water phantom. In radiation calorimetry by laser beams and interferometric systems, the amount of change induced by radiation within the phantom can be accurately measured. Absorption of dose and the resulted change in temperature changes the refractive index within the material. In o...

This paper presents an in-plane hydrodynamically reconfigurable optofluidic microlens, which is formed by the laminar flow of two streams of a low-refractive-index fluid and two streams of a high-refractive-index fluid in the two microchannels connecting to an expansion chamber where the microlens finally forms. In the expansion chamber, the stream of high-refractive-index fluid, acting as core...
